UK Prix Galien shared

Fuzeon (enfuvirtide, Roche) and Prevenar (pneumococcal polysaccharide, Wyeth) have shared this year’s United Kingdom Prix Galien award for innovative pharmaceutical products.

Fuzeon is an anti-retroviral drug which tackles the HIV virus by preventing it from entering the cell. Prevenar is a new conjugate vaccine which offers protection against seven serotypes of pneumococcal infection. Professor Sir Michael Rawlins (chairman, National Institute for Clinical Excellence and chairman of the judging panel) said the panel had been impressed with the results of the clinical trials of Fuzeon and the complex manufacturing issues solved in its development, as well as the potential impact of Prevenar in preventing serious infection in young children and infants.
