ABPI launches innovation award
Pharmacists who develop innovative services to improve the use of medicines are to be recognised through a new award launched this week by the Association
of the British Pharmaceutical Industry.
The award — sponsored BPC attendance — will be given to up
to six pharmacists who have shown innovative practice that has improved
the use of medicines, shown significant improvements in the quality of
prescribing, dispensing or administration of medicines, or developed
services that ensure patient access to high quality care and medicines.
The award was welcomed by the chief pharmacists of Scotland, Wales and
England.
Carwen Wynne Howells, Chief Pharmaceutical Adviser for Wales, who spoke
at an ABPI reception at BPC to mark the launch, said: “This is
an excellent example of how the pharmaceutical industry can support the
work of practising pharmacists.
“
The award will complement the National Assembly’s schemes to foster
service development. Pharmacists’ skills have long been under-valued,
and I welcome the fact that the changing role of the pharmacist has been
recognised in this way by the ABPI.”
Jim Smith, Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for England, said: “I would
encourage pharmacists from across Great Britain to take this opportunity
to have their achievements commended nationally.”
Bill Scott, Chief Pharmacist, Scotland, added that the Scottish Executive
Health Department had worked closely with the ABPI in developing a framework
on joint working between the NHS and the industry and said the department
supported the new award.
Applications are welcomed from any practising pharmacist and will be
reviewed by a panel of senior pharmacists with input from the ABPI. Judging
will take place in May each year and announcements of the winners will
be made in June. |
