Flu vaccine manufacturing halted by MHRA
Fluvirin influenza vaccine will not be available this year.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has suspended manufacturer Chiron’s manufacturing licence for three months because
of a lack of compliance with good manufacturing practice at the company’s
Liverpool factory.
Chiron was expected to supply 20 per cent of the flu vaccine needed in
the UK this year and half of that needed in the US. The company expects
to make up some of the UK shortfall, but not the US shortage, from other
European manufacturing sites.
Fluvirin has not been yet been distributed this year, so there will be
no product recall. Chiron’s manufacturing licence was suspended
by the MHRA the day after England’s chief medical officer launched
this year’s influenza vaccination campaign. |
