Society in talks with DoH on personal control and GSLs

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society is holding talks with the Department of Health over the issue of personal control and restrictions on the sale of general sale list medicines from a pharmacy in the absence of a pharmacist.

The President, Nicholas Wood, said that the Medicines Act 1968 restricted GSL sales in pharmacies but not in other outlets — an anomaly that could be resolved only by legislation. The President said: "We are in discussions with the Department of Health over possible interim solutions that will help pharmacists while the longer term solution is worked on."
