UK pharmaceutical public health specialist register on the cards

A UK-wide voluntary register for specialists in pharmaceutical public health could be created next year. This is one of the options being considered by a new project funded by the UK departments of health.

Specialists who are competent in 10 key areas of public health practice can already register with the UK Voluntary Specialist Register. Following its success, registration for specialists in eight specific areas of public health is now being considered. Project funding has been granted to develop assessment and accreditation frameworks for each of these eight areas.

Pharmacy is one of the defined areas. The pharmacy project lead is Roger Walker who is a consultant in pharmaceutical public health at the National Public Health Service for Wales and a director of Pharmacy HealthLink. Further information about the project is available on PharmacyHealthLink’s website (www.pharmacyhealthlink.org.uk) and pharmacists who wish to become involved in the consultation should contact Professor Walker by e-mail (roger.walker@nphs.wales.nhs.uk).

The project work will begin this autumn and results are not expected until the middle of next year. The other seven specialist areas being examined are academic public health, environmental public health, health promotion, public health nutrition, health intelligence, health psychology and health protection.
