Pharmacy-based diabetes service extended

A pharmacist-run diabetes service in Hillingdon has been extended this month following the success of its pilot phase.

The service involves the use of questionnaires for pharmacists to assess patients’ understanding and knowledge about diabetes, and to identify areas in which the patient needs further support. In particular, it enables patients to improve their understanding about their medicines. Patients are seen every two months.

The pilot, which is run by Pharmacy Alliance (UniChem’s medicines management division) and Hillingdon Primary Care Trust, has been running in four community pharmacies for two years. A Pharmacy Alliance spokeswoman said that the success of the service in these four pharmacies had resulted in it being expanded to a further six pharmacies which started offering the service this month.

Alistair Marsh, network director of Pharmacy Alliance, commented: “This programme is an excellent example of the potential role of community pharmacy in delivering patient support and advice on long-term health conditions.”
