Scottish Executive considers new structure for its devolved roles
The need for a new structure for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Scottish Executive was discussed at a meeting of the executive on 20 October.
The possibility of renaming the executive was also raised during the
meeting.
The executive discussed its structure during consideration of the key
stakeholder consultation document produced by the Society’s Devolution
Review Group. It was thought that the executive’s structure should
reflect the need for an enhanced strategic leadership role.
One reason for a possible name change is that the devolved Government
in Scotland has also taken the title “Scottish Executive”.
The meeting, chaired by executive chairman Angela Timoney, agreed that
it was important for the executive to be able to set local policy within
the framework of overall Society policy. It also expressed a wish to
have some of the Society’s disciplinary cases heard in Edinburgh.
The executive meeting was also addressed by the Society’s President,
Nick Wood, and Vice-President, Hemant Patel. The President said that
the adoption of a new Charter for the Society had been a long and difficult
process. He thanked pharmacists in Scotland for their input and hoped
that the explicit provisions in the document now satisfied their aspirations.
The Vice-President said that all the health professions needed to work
closely together while accepting that the diversity of health care delivery
systems that now existed in Britain placed different demands on pharmacy
practice.
