Scottish Medicines Consortium issues advice on five drugs

The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has issued advice on five drugs:

· Conjugated oestrogen medroxyprogesterone (Premique Low Dose) has been accepted as a hormone replacement therapy for oestrogen deficiency symptoms in postmenopausal women with an intact uterus.

· Losartan (Cozaar) has been accepted for restricted use as an alternative treatment to delay progression of renal disease and to reduce proteinuria in patients with type 2 diabetes with nephropathy if the patient is unable to tolerate an ACE inhibitor.

· Testosterone mucoadhesive buccal tablets (Striant) have been accepted for restricted use as testosterone replacement therapy in men with primary or secondary hypogonadism, but only when intramuscular treatment is not suitable.

· Also accepted for restricted use is aprepitant (Emend). It is recommended for prevention of acute and delayed nausea and vomiting associated with highly emetogenic cisplatin-based chemotherapy.

· Solifenacin (Vesicare) was not recommended for treatment of urge incontinence or increased urinary frequency. The SMC says that, although solifenacin was effective in reducing symptoms associated with overactive bladder, the economic case for its use was not demonstrated.
