Medicines governance project wins patient safety award

A pharmacy initiative designed to reduce the risk of medication errors has won the Health Service Journal award for patient safety. Staff from the Northern Ireland medicines governance project were presented with the award at a ceremony in London last week.

Mid Staffordshire General Hospitals NHS Trust won the “Implementing NICE guidance” award for a project that involved the hospital's prescribing committee working with the local primary care trust on an implementation strategy.

The awards are judged by a panel of health service figures, led by NHS chief executive Sir Nigel Crisp. The judges praised the use of data in the medicines governance project, its sound evidence and multidisciplinary approach and the way it actively involved patients.
