The Journal
Would I get my Journal?
From Mr M. E. Q. James, FRPharmS
I really did not know whether to laugh or cry when I saw the advertisement
in the middle of the letters section of the PJ today (26 November). And
opposite the letters from the Pam and Michael Munro, yet more older pharmacists
who have contributed substantially to the profession over the years.
Olivia Timbs is unquestionably a competent journalist and has done some
good things with The Journal, but tact is not one of her more noticeable
attributes. First of all there was the “For roughly two days’ locum
work it is cheap at the price” editorial and now this.
However, I have an idea, and I am happy to ask publicly if it is acceptable.
If I do decide to retire, I intend to ask a younger colleague to buy
me The Journal, at the £40 rate, naturally being prepared to defray
the expense. On the form I shall put down the University of the Third
Age, where, since retiring from full-time work I have found many congenial
companions, who, like me, wish to keep their minds active. By this means
I will be able to keep in touch with the profession.

The special £40 offer is only open until the end of this
year, so Mr James will have to make up his mind soon. However,
we hope to offer people who are retiring from the Register a reduced
subscription rate next year — details still to be finalised.

Front cover “offensive”
From Miss S. S. Kong, MRPharmS
I am writing to let you know that I find the front cover of The Pharmaceutical
Journal of 20 November offensive. The display of multi-coloured condoms
is most unattractive and may even jeopardise the professional value of
The Journal.
I do like the new layout of the covering page and I know that effort has
been made to improve The Journal. However, I do hope that standards will
be maintained and that this is a “one-off”.
