Mandeville Medicines paediatric prize winner

Sara Arenas-Lopez receives her prize |
The 2004 Neonatal and Paediatric Pharmacists Group prize, in association with Mandeville Medicines, was awarded to Sara Arenas-Lopez at the NPPG conference this week.
Ms Arenas-Lopez, a specialist pharmacist at Guy’s Hospital, London,
received the award for her research on the use of oral clonidine for
sedation in ventilated paediatric intensive care patients. By performing
a prospective cohort study of 24 children, Ms Arenas-Lopez and her team
found that oral clonidine may be a safe and effective sedative in combination
with morphine and lorazepam for young children with single-organ respiratory
failure. They found that the drug may also have opioid and benzodiazepine
sparing effects in this group.
The ManMed research award was not distributed this year because there
were not enough applications of a high enough standard. The money will
therefore be rolled into the 2005 award, which now stands at up to £7,000.
