Devolution review group to recommend a Welsh language scheme
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s devolution review group is to recommend to the Council that the Society should develop and adopt a Welsh Language Scheme. The review group agreed to make its recommendation
after taking evidence from key stakeholders in Wales at a meeting
in Cardiff on 8 and 9 November (PJ, 13 November, p716).
Welsh Language Schemes are promoted by the Welsh Language Board, which
was set up under the Welsh Language Act 1993. Their purpose is to set
out how an organisation will provide Welsh language services, having
regard to what is appropriate and practicable. Every draft scheme is
subject to public consultation before being approved.
The group also took evidence at a meeting
in Scotland on 26 October (PJ 30 October, p645).
The group’s early thinking on devolution is to be presented to
the Council by the group chairman, Lord Fraser of Carmyllie, at a Council
strategy day on 6 December.
The Society says that devolution consultation documents have been sent
to a range of stakeholders and are available on the Society's website
(www.rpsgb.org/devolution) and responses are now being received from
the stakeholders, branches and members.
The next scheduled meeting of the devolution review group takes place
on 15 December at the Society's London headquarters. Anyone wishing to
attend should contact Michele Savage, the project leader for the devolution
review (tel 020 7572 2547; e-mail: michele.savage@rpsgb.org. Further
information on the review is available from the devolution
review page of the Society's website.
