Le Roy Le Veult

Le Roy Le Veult

This cartoon, entitled “Le Roy Le Veult”, is taken from The Pharmaceutical Journal of 1 July 1933. It shows Pharmaceutical Society ex-presidents E. T. Nethercoat (1920–24), A. R. Melhuish (1930–32) and F. G. Hines (1932–33) delivering the new Pharmacy and Poisons Act 1933 to “The British Pharmacy”. The Act, which gave the Society the responsibility for regulating pharmacists and made membership compulsory, had just received Royal Assent (“Le Roy Le Veult”) after a number of setbacks in its progress. As a Bill it had first been introduced in the House of Lords on 17 December 1930. Following the dissolution of the Labour Government in 1931, it was not reintroduced until 28 February 1933.

The Society’s new Charter also experienced a number of hiccups before it finally came into force on 7 December, after 21 months of challenges and redrafts. Plus ça change
