New Year's resolutions

Some resolutions more challenging than others

From Mr P. D. Burgess, MRPharmS

It is that time of the year again when New Year’s resolutions are determined. It is a crazy old world. For instance, I woke up today to hear on the news that because the new Freedom of Information Act is about to become law all the civil servants are twice as busy shredding the information. So one of my resolutions is to try not to be party to stupidity.

I will endeavour to remember that dentists, even though they can prescribe almost any POM on a private prescription and many items on NHS prescriptions, cannot telephone emergency prescriptions through. How did nurses get to be higher up the ladder?

I will endeavour to save the NHS money by not sending orders for aqueous cream with menthol 0.5 per cent to a specials manufacturer.

I will not over-react to single incidents but will be quick to respond to trends when errors come to light.

I will not check the contents of every bag I hand out but instead rely on my fellow professionals to own up to their mistakes.

I will not check the contents of every box I dispense but instead rely on the wholesaler’s or manufacturer’s liabilities.

Next Christmas I will not allow the eighth repeat of Slade on the loudspeaker near the dispensary to affect my concentration.

Paul Burgess
Kingston, Surrey
