Professors cannot be confused with Santa
From Mr M. James, FRPharmS
Professors cannot be confused with Santa Claus.
Reason: my recollection is that Santa came originally from the east (although
nowadays, as any fule kno, he is based in the north) and there was
once a graffito on a Belgian university wall, which, translated, read:
Q. “Why do Professors come from the west”
A. “Because the Bible says the wise men came from the east!”
I rest my case.

How can we expect to be taken seriously?
From Mr G. Baker
The BMJ is an internationally respected journal, which only
adds to the respectability of the medical profession and the reputation
of doctors
in the UK. It is full of up-to-date, peer-reviewed articles on all areas
of medicine, whereas the PJ has a study on beards (PDF 200K)
and a spot
the difference competition. What’s next? A free Refresher
bar attached to the front cover?
And we expect to be taken seriously as a profession!

Preregistration trainee, Oxford

The 18/25
December 2004 issue of the BMJ contains several light articles.
For example, a study by Knight et al tests the hypothesis that emboli
which cause transient ischaemic attacks may move in the bloodstream
in the same way that fir cones floated when they were first used by
Winnie-the-Pooh
and his friends playing poohsticks. Another article examines the mental
state of Gollum, the character from Lord of the Rings, and a field guide
to artifexology aims to help people protect themselves from the insidious
influence of experts. — EDITOR
