Four pharmacy technicians are the first to register with the Society
this week
Four pharmacy technicians became the first to register with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society this week.
They are: Linda Hopkinson, who is currently on secondment working on
Boots The Chemist’s pharmacy systems programme in Nottingham; Alan
Hunt, senior technician at Essex Nuffield Hospital; Clair Moore, pharmacy
technician at Warwickshire Nuffield Hospital; and Lesley Morgan, assistant
director (support staff) at the Welsh Centre for Postgraduate Pharmaceutical
Education.
“
It is a very exciting development,” said Ms Hopkinson. “At
last we are getting recognition from the official pharmacy body. It will
also lead to better recognition of our role from the public, other professionals
and employers.”
Ms Morgan commented: “Registration represents the acceptance of
pharmacy technicians as professional people and acknowledges the role
that technicians play in the delivery of the modern pharmacy service.
It shows that technicians are ready to take this responsibility.”
Janet Flint, head of support staff regulation at the Society, welcomed
the four technicians to the register. “The four represent just
the start: a number of applications are currently being processed and
many more are coming in every day,” she said. “I am really
pleased with the level of interest we have had from technicians. In December
alone, the application form on the Society’s website received 1,478
hits and we have already sent out more than 600 paper copies of the application
pack.”
However, Ms Flint added that technicians should take care to ensure that
all sections of the application form are correctly filled out and the
necessary documentation is enclosed. “We have had to return a good
proportion of forms because they have not been completed properly,” she
said.
Voluntary registration was introduced for technicians this month. Registration
will
become mandatory in January 2007. More information can be accessed here |
