Proportion of “practising” pharmacists increases
The proportion of pharmacists who have registered with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society as “practising” has substantially increased since last week.
At the beginning of January, The Journal reported that one-fifth
of pharmacists had
declared themselves “non-practising” (PJ, 1/8 January, p3).
On 11 January, the numbers had increased to 2,895 “non-practising” pharmacists
and 19,724 “practising” pharmacists. These figures equate
to roughly one-eighth of pharmacists registering as “non-practising” compared
with last week’s one-fifth.
However, the number of pharmacists who have chosen to retire from the
register remains unknown. A Society spokeswoman said this week that the
figure is not available and that it will not be announced until April.
An indication may be gained from the fall in circulation of The Journal,
which is automatically sent to all members of the Society. The 11 December
2004 issue was sent to 47,850 members compared with the 1/8 January 2005
issue which was sent to 46,904 members; a difference of 946. It should
be noted that this figure includes those pharmacists who would have retired
anyway, despite changes to the registration requirements. In 2003, 530
members retired over the year. |
