Co-operative Group buys out Welsh pharmacy chain

Co-operative Group Pharmacy has bought out the Welsh pharmacy group Howard & Palmer Ltd.

The Co-operative Group announced last week that it had acquired the 27 remaining Howard & Palmer pharmacies for an undisclosed sum. The move follows the acquisition of 11 pharmacies from Howard & Palmer last summer (PJ, 28 August 2004, p281).

The pharmacies are all in the Swansea area. Staff will be transferred to the Co-operative Group and the pharmacies will be rebranded in the next few months. John Makepeace, the Co-operative Group Pharmacy’s general manager, commented: “This is an important acquisition of a significant number of branches and is indicative of our ambitious development and expansion plans.” The group now has 351 branches in the UK.
