Clopidogrel and ulcer prevention

Patients with a history of aspirin-induced ulcer bleeding fare better if they are treated with aspirin and a proton-pump inhibitor than if they are given clopidogrel (Plavix) (New England Journal of Medicine 2005;352:238). Researchers compared the two treatment strategies in 320 patients — the incidence of recurrent bleeding was 8.6 per cent for patients treated with clopidogrel and 0.7 per cent for patients treated with aspirin plus esomeprazole (P=0.001).
