New book provides introduction to economic evaluation in health care
A book on economic evaluation in health care is now available from the Pharmaceutical Press (the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s publishing arm). The book aims to provide an introduction to the topic for health care professionals, researchers and managers who have little or no background in economics and health economics.
‘Essentials of economic evaluation in healthcare’ is written by
Rachel Elliot, a clinical senior lecturer in the University of Manchester
school of pharmacy, and Katherine Payne, a research fellow in health
economics at the North West Genetics Knowledge Park, St Mary’s
Hospital, Manchester,
The book starts with a general introduction to economic issues and the
main types of economic evaluation, including cost effectiveness, cost
utility and cost benefit analysis. It also covers the use of decision
analysis to design economic evaluations, assessing the value of economic
evaluations and using them in decision making, statistical methods of
analysis and discrete choice experiments. Worked examples and self-directed
questions conclude each chapter.
