ABPI code should reflect pharmacists’ views
The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry has called on pharmacists to respond to its consultation on the ABPI code of practice.
The code covers all forms of promotion of prescription medicines to health
care professionals in the UK, as well as the provision of information
to the public by pharmaceutical companies.
An ABPI spokesman explained that organisations such as regulators and
professional bodies had been approached for their views but added that
responses from individual pharmacists would be welcome. “Since
the last major review of the code, pharmacists have increasingly been
gaining prescribing rights and they are more likely to come across pharmaceutical
industry representatives in the future. The code of practice needs to
reflect the views of pharmacists.”
The consultation process will last until 11 March. Comments can be sent
by letter to the ABPI, 12 Whitehall, London SW1A 2DY, or by e-mail to
abpicode@abpi.org.uk. The ABPI hopes to publish its new code before the
end of 2005.
