Repeat dispensing system well received by GPs

Pharmacist-managed repeat dispensing services

Pharmacist-managed repeat dispensing services have been welcomed by GPs

A pharmacist-managed repeat dispensing system has been well received by GPs.

The evaluation, of a pilot scheme published in the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice (2005;13:41), considers the GP perspective of repeat dispensing and involved 36 GPs from 15 general practices.

The GPs were sent questionnaires and most responded positively to the system saying they would like to use it, or a modified version of it, for their patients.

The questionnaires gave the GPs a chance to give their opinions of the new services and also allowed possible improvements to be highlighted.

Repeat dispensing is one of the essential services to be provided under the new community pharmacy contract in England and Wales when it comes into force in April.

Terry Porteous, research pharmacist at the University of Aberdeen and one of the authors of the study, commented that service developments such as repeat dispensing systems would not happen overnight. “We are trying to make sure that the introduction of these services go as smoothly as possible,” she said.
