SPC changes

Plavix
The summary of product characteristics for Plavix (clopidogrel; sanofi-aventis and Bristol-Myers Squibb) has been updated to include the following undesirable effects: serum sickness, interstitial pneumonitis, stomatitis and acute liver failure. See SPC.

Singulair
Singulair (montelukast; Merck Sharp & Dohme) is now additionally licensed for the symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis in asthmatic patients in whom montelukast is indicated. The dose for this indication is one 10mg tablet daily to be taken in the evening. Clinical trial data supporting this indication have been added to the SPC. See SPC.

Discontinued products

Erythromycin
Abbott is discontinuing erythromycin tablets 250mg x 100 when current stocks are exhausted. The company expects this to be in mid-March. Packs of 500 tablets remain available.

Moditen
Moditen (fluphenazine hydrochloride; sanofi-aventis) tablets 5mg have been discontinued. Moditen tablets 2.5mg will be discontinued when current stocks are exhausted, the company expects this to be in six to nine months. Moditen tablets 1mg remain available.

Pyrogastrone
Pyrogastrone (carbenoxolone sodium; sanofi-aventis) tablets have been discontinued.

Penicillin suspension
From this month Kent Pharmaceuticals is changing its penicillin suspension to a sugar free formulation. Net price, 100ml, 125mg/5ml £1.97, 250mg/5ml £2.69. The old formulation will be discontinued when stocks are exhausted.
