Five elections to be held as 33 fight to join reformed Council

Election Regulations approved

The elections to the Council are being held under new Regulations. After being published for 60 days (see PJ, 11 December 2004, 867), the Regulations have now been approved by the Privy Council and came into force on 22 February (see Official Notice, p318). The Regulations replace Section XII of the Society's Byelaws, under which previous Council elections have been held.

The level of interest in serving on the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s reformed Council is such that five elections are to be held this year. The elections are being held under new Society Regulations (see Panel).

Twenty-nine candidates are contesting the 14 unreserved places for pharmacists and three are competing for the two vacancies for pharmacy technicians. In addition, there will be elections for each of the pharmacist places reserved to the new national constituencies, with two candidates competing to represent England, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, two standing to represent Scotland and three seeking to represent Wales. Apart from one candidate from Scotland, all the pharmacists contesting the reserved places are also standing for unreserved places.

Missing from the list of pharmacist candidates are six current Council members. They are Nicholas Wood (currently President), Christine Glover, Hassan Argomandkhah, Nicola Gray, Clive Jackson and Noel Wicks.

Mr Wood’s intention to retire has already been announced (PJ, 26 February, p223). Mrs Glover is retiring after more than 12 years’ on the Council, including two years as president (1999–2001). She was first elected in 1992 after being co-opted in 1991. In 1998 she resigned shortly after being re-elected but rejoined the Council the following year. Mr Argomandkhah has served on the Council for eight years — from 1994 to 2002 and since 2003. Dr Gray has five years’ service, having first been elected in 2000. Mr Jackson has served for the past three years and Mr Wicks for two years.

The 14 other current Council members are all seeking election to unreserved places on the new Council. They are Hemant Patel (Vice-President), John Jolley (Treasurer), Gerald Alexander, Martin Astbury, Shiv Bagga, Sultan Dajani, Digby Emson, Davan Eustace, Alison Ewing, Gill Hawksworth, Patricia Hoare, Graham Phillips, Douglas Simpson and Linda Stone.

They are joined in this election by Mohammed Ahmed, Jonathan Buisson, Dorothy Drury, Robert Gartside, Gordon Geddes, John Gentle, Jaggy Khela, Andrew McCoig, Tony Moffat, Bharat Nathwani, Colin Ranshaw, Vanessa Taylor, David Thomson, Valerie Turner and Steve Wells.

Mr Buisson and Mr Khela are also competing to represent the national constituency of England, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. Mr Gartside, Mr Ranshaw and Mr Wells are also in the running to represent Wales. Mr Thomson is competing with Ian Mullen to represent Scotland.

In the election of two pharmacy technicians, the candidates are Corinne Hunt, Lesley Morgan and Christopher Phillips.

Biographical details of the candidates and their declarations of relevant interest can be found on p306 and seven following pages (PDF 380K). Voting papers and a booklet containing biographical details of pharmacist candidates and their election statements were due to be posted to members on 11 March. Details of the pharmacy technician candidates appear in a separate booklet sent with voting papers to all registered pharmacy technicians.
