Students would like management training in the MPharm course

Management training should be incorporated into the pharmacy undergraduate degree course, according to pharmacy students attending the British Pharmaceutical Students’ Association annual conference being held in Nottingham this week.

Elizabeth Doran, immediate past president of the BPSA, proposed the motion following a presentation by UniChem encouraging students to consider owning their own pharmacy. Ms Doran pointed out that many pharmacy students may not think they know enough about business and management to consider this career option, and said that lectures in the subject would be useful for future pharmacists in whichever field of pharmacy they work.

Rebecca Bourn, Bradford, seconded the motion adding that many universities already have excellent management training facilities that could be tailored for pharmacy students. Peter Burley, head of preregistration at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, said that the Society was looking into this possibility as part of its “fit for the future” project.

Some delegates raised concerns about how broad the degree course was becoming and suggested that management could be an optional module, or that management training might be better left to the preregistration year. Nevertheless, the motion was carried.

More detailed coverage of the BPSA conference will appear in the next issue of The Journal.

UniChem student award UniChem, together with the British Pharmaceutical Students Association, has launched a new award for pharmacy students in the UK who are considering a career in independent community pharmacy. The winner will receive a place at the next year’s BPSA conference for themselves and a friend, a month’s work experience at a UniChem independent community pharmacy and £500. A runner up will receive £150. Applicants will have to write a maximum of 1,000 words about why they want to own a pharmacy. Application forms are available from BPSA representatives or by e-mailing pro@bpsa.com. The closing date for this year’s award is 30 September.
