Business skills

IPMI has a role

From Professor H. McNulty, FRPharmS

Jaggy Khela (PJ, 26 March, p361) identifies a gap in training in business skills in pharmacy’s undergraduate and preregistration education programmes. Gaps in management competencies are also a significant feature of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Workforce Competency Framework Phase 2 report of 2004 (PDF 1.2 MB).

The Institute of Pharmacy Management’s spring newsletter makes reference to similar concerns. The institute has objectives to improve pharmacy management skills and has drawn these matters and similar gaps in post-registration training programmes to the Society’s attention. We understand this is to be taken into consideration in reviewing the indicative syllabus course content (PDF 75K), some of which is EU-driven.

Members of the institute are among those who have contributed to the recent publication ‘Pharmacy business management’ and published by the Pharmaceutical Press. The institute also runs conferences on current managerial topics, the details of which can be found at www.ipmi.org.uk
