Funding for osteoporosis

The Department of Health has announced £20m extra funding for osteoporosis service improvements and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanners. Bone density scanning is usually performed in hospitals, but portable DXA scanners have previously been used in an osteoporosis screening pilot in a pharmacy in North-East London (Medicines Management 2002;[5]:5). The pilot was not rolled out on a larger scale due to lack of funding.
