Diuretics first line

Diuretics should be used first line for both black and non-black patients with high blood pressure, data from the ALLHAT study show. The analysis was conducted to determine whether an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor or calcium channel blocker is superior to a thiazide diuretic in reducing cardiovascular disease incidence in racial subgroups (JAMA 2005;293:1595).
