Pharmaceutical industry responds slowly to NHS

The pharmaceutical industry is responding too slowly to changes in the health service to meet the needs of today’s NHS, the results of a study suggest.

Market information group Taylor Nelson Sofres questioned heads of medicines management and prescribing at primary care trusts, GPs and patient groups on behalf of Takeda UK. Most PCT leads thought that pharmaceutical companies were still operating as they had five to 10 years ago. Three-quarters of PCT leads believed that pharmaceutical companies should avoid a purely product-focused approach and 80 per cent thought that they should work in partnership with primary care organisations to develop local strategies to meet local needs.

Respondents also questioned whether traditional sales representatives could meet the requirements of the modern NHS: 45 per cent of PCT leads and 40 per cent of GPs believed that their knowledge of new products would be unaffected if they never saw another pharmaceutical sales representative.
