Repeat dispensing

Any savings unlikely to be passed to pharmacy

From Mr U. A. Patel, MRPharmS

I note John Wilson’s reply to my letter (PJ, 19 March, p336) and Sue Smith’s letter (PJ, 2 April, p388). I have attended the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education workshop on repeat dispensing and I am implementing it in the local primary care trust. The primary objective of the scheme is to reduce the workload at the surgery and increase patient convenience. As I wrote in my original letter (PJ, 5 March, p269), the consequence will be increased workload at the pharmacy. I am aware of the essential service 2 in the new contract and the “funding” for it. The Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee has not published the detailed costing for this service to my knowledge. In my view, any cost saving at the surgery, if any, is unlikely to be passed on to the pharmacy.
