Society consults on ending reciprocal registration scheme
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Council is now consulting on its proposal to set 30 June 2006 as the date from which reciprocal
registration arrangements with Australia, New Zealand and South Africa will end (PJ,
16 April, p465).
The proposed amendment to the Society’s Byelaws is set out in an
Official Notice this week (p505). Interested parties have 60 days in
which to comment. The Council will then be asked to confirm the proposal
in the light of comments received. The proposal, accompanied by the comments,
will then be submitted to the Privy Council for its approval.
The Council agreed 18 months ago that the reciprocity
agreement should end (PJ, 11 October 2003, p524) and it has now set the date after consultation
with the pharmacy regulators in Australia and New Zealand. The date has
been chosen to coincide with the legislative timetable and with the academic
year and registration cycle in those countries.
The Society says that in the interests of fairness and transparency the
same registration route should apply to all pharmacists from outside
the UK other than those qualifying under the European Directives.
The Society’s President, Nicholas Wood, said: “It is important
that everyone is aware of the date … and that anyone who wishes to
apply by the current route knows when they need to do this by.”
