National Association of Women Pharmacists (NAWP)

Is the NAWP needed?

From Mr J. L. Honigman, MRPharmS

I am somewhat at a loss to understand the reasoning behind the letter protesting about the lack of women pharmacists on the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Council (PJ, 30 April, p516). One might assume that this is due to the fact that women are happy to vote for men in this situation or, possibly, that women do not bother with such trivialities as voting.

I am wondering, too, whether a sexist organisation, such as the National Association of Women’s Pharmacists is not now an anachronism. After all, what with maternity leave, job sharing and locum hours which can be fitted to domestic, or any other commitments (including political), the conditions for professional women, particularly pharmacists, are far better than the founders of this body could have ever envisaged.

Surely there is no suggestion here that women are more “professional” in their outlook than their brothers!
