Continuing professional development (CPD)

Reflection does not guarantee competence

From Mr A. Matalia, MRPharmS

The whole procedure of having to record what continuing professional development you do and the way in which you do it is tedious and ill thought out. Many pharmacists have not the time or inclination to undertake CPD. They do it because they are forced to. Why go down this ridiculous and expensive route? Is this what our membership fees have been wasted on? Membership fees should not reflect CPD costs. Members should be given a choice: those who want to record their CPD using the Society’s system should pay a separate fee and others should be able to choose free forms of recording.

We should go back to the system of continuing education because reflection is meaningless in practice and does not guarantee competence.

A. Matalia
Coventry, West Midlands
