Community pharmacy

Apology for communication problems

From Dr B. Hawkins, MRPharmS

I am writing in response to the letter from Arlene Osman (PJ, 7 May, p544).

Rhondda Cynon Taff Local Health Board acknowledges that its communication with pharmacist colleagues in the area regarding this project was not as it should have been and apologises for any inconvenience caused. A letter was sent to all contractors and Community Pharmacy Wales in April to explain the situation when we became aware that the strips were being distributed sooner than anticipated.

As part of a small, temporary project we have been working with local GPs to rationalise the prescribing and supply of diabetes test strips to patients via practice diabetes clinics. This initiative is part of a wider project, which is intended to rationalise the testing of blood sugars by diabetic patients. Participating practices will see patients via diabetes clinics and, therefore, there should be little extra workload on busy practice staff as suggested. Patients will receive sufficient supplies to last until their next clinic visit. Future supplies will be prescribed on FP10, as before.

We are keen to work with community pharmacist colleagues and support them in the implementation of the new pharmaceutical contract. We apologise again for the communication problems that have arisen and will renew our close working with pharmacist colleagues in future.

Brian Hawkins
Head of Pharmacy and Medicines Management
Rhondda Cynon Taff Local Health Board
