Statutory Committee

An interesting commentary on self-regulation

From Dr J. Landau, MRPharmS

The juxtaposition of two decisions by the Statutory Committee (PJ, 16 April) provide an interesting commentary on self-regulation in pharmaceutical practice.

Sohail Virdi (p466) was apprehended with three tubes of moisturiser stolen from his employer. Having been convicted in Crown Court, fined £300 and ordered to pay £900 costs, Mr Virdi has been declared by the Statutory Committee as unfit to remain on the Register. Presumably we can now all sleep more securely knowing that our moisturiser supply is now safe.

On the other hand, Sureshchandra Laliji Patel (ibid, p467) dispensed 12.5 mg tablets of carvedilol and labelled them as bisoprolol 1.25 mg, denied his error, attempted to blame the doctor and, in general, did not demonstrate acceptable professional or pharmaceutical practice. The unfortunate patient who suffered marked distress for nearly a month and was spared additional problems only by her doctor’s intervention. The Statutory Committee, in accepting his assurance that he will not practise pharmacy, has simply given Mr Patel a reprimand.
