National Association of Women Pharmacists

How many women pharmacists avail themselves of NAWP membership?

From Mr J. L. Honigman, MRPharmS

With all respect, neither Christine Heading nor Sue Symonds (PJ, 14 May, p583) have addressed the original question posed by Monica Rose (PJ, 30 April, p516) as to the reasons that women were disproportionately represented, or unrepresented on the Society’s Council, to which I responded. Certainly, I was not aware of the other activities with which the National Association of Women Pharmacists concerns itself, but then why should I be?

What is more serious from their points of view is that I took the trouble to question some of the women in my branch as to their affiliation. Despite having been active committee members for some years and, indeed having been honorary officers, these women had not joined NAWP. Further, they could only tell me of one branch member who had taken an interest in NAWP, albeit some time ago.

Is it pertinent to ask how many of members of the Society who could belong to NAWP avail themselves of the opportunity to do so? Possibly, this might reveal that the proportion of women Council members reflects the ratio of NAWP members to the total number of women on the Register.
