New health and social care strategy for Wales launched

A new 10-year strategy for health and social care in Wales has been launched by Welsh Health Minister Brian Gibbons.

“Designed for life” (PDF 480K) builds on the principles outlined in the 2001 document “Improving health in Wales” and aims to promote the health and well-being of people in Wales through partnerships of NHS staff, service users and the public.

The document emphasises the importance of patients having prompt access to their primary care team, who will be central to the delivery of chronic disease management. It states: “Pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses will acquire special skills and provide specialist services that use their full potential.”

Mair Davies, chairman of the Welsh Executive of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, commented: “We hope ‘Designed for life’ will provide the necessary framework for pharmacists to fulfil their potential role as expert local health advisers delivering first class health care services.”
