Complaints over volume-based promotions upheld

Complaints against Superdrug and Tesco over volume-based promotions of medicines, such as “two for the price of one” or “buy one get one free” offers, have been upheld by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

Jeremy Mean, MHRA policy group manager, said: “The Government has made it clear that it will consider changing the law if retailers do not act responsibly. Promotions that lead to the unnecessary purchase of medicines and which undermine the intention of the pack size restrictions that have been brought in for the protection of public safety are not acceptable.” Superdrug has agreed not to run similar promotions in the future and Tesco confirmed that it had no plans to run this type of promotion again.
