Jim Smith: new post at the University of Sunderland

Jim Smith has announced that he is retiring from the post of Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for England. After more than four years in the role he will leave the Department of Health at the end of August and take up an appointment as professor of pharmacy practice and policy at the University of Sunderland.

“It has been a privilege to serve as Chief Pharmaceutical Officer during an exciting and challenging period for medicines and pharmacy policy, with unprecedented changes in the prescribing, supply and use of medicines, in the role of pharmacists and in the way we deliver pharmacy services,” said Dr Smith. He added: “The pace of change is unlikely to slacken over the next few years and I look forward to supporting and working towards further developments in pharmacy and the use of medicines through my new roles in teaching and research.”

The Department of Health will advertise the post of Chief Pharmaceutical Officer shortly.
