Mechanism agreed for appointing members of Section 60 committees

The Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has agreed an outline mechanism for appointing panels from which to draw members for the statutory committees that will be established through pharmacy’s Order under Section 60 of the Health Act 1999.

Committees expected to be created under the Order include an investigating committee, a health committee, a disciplinary committee and a registration appeals committee.

At the June Council meeting, the Council agreed to create an Appointments Group specifically to appoint panel members for the new statutory committees and also to appoint legal, clinical and specialist advisers to those committees.

The group would consist of a lay chairman, a lay deputy chairman, two pharmacists and a pharmacy technician. None would be Council members. The chairman would be appointed by the Council and the rest of the group would be recruited by open advertisement. The chairman would work with the Society’s head of human resource to draw up the role profiles and required competencies for group members.

The Council also accepted a recommendation of the Officers that the chairmanship of the group should be offered to Elizabeth Filkin, who recently chaired the Society’s Shipman working groups. Ms Filkin has extensive appropriate experience and has indicated that invited she would accept.

In making its decisions, the Council agreed that they would apply in the first place only to appointments to the expected investigating committee, health committee, disciplinary committee and registration appeals committee. It would reserve its decision in relation to other possible Section 60 committees, which might include a continuing professional development committee and an education committee.
