HRT containing drospirenone launched

Hormone replacement therapy with drospirenone is now available from Schering Health Care.

Angeliq (estradiol 1mg and drospirenone 2mg) is licensed for oestrogen deficiency symptoms in postmenopausal women more than one year post menopause. It is also licensed for the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high risk of future fractures who are intolerant of other products approved for the prevention of osteoporosis or in whom these products are contraindicated.

The company says that the pharmacodynamic profile of drospirenone, the progestogen used in the hormonal contraceptive Yasmin but not previously used in HRT, resembles a woman’s natural progesterone more closely than other synthetic progestogens, and its anti-mineralocorticoid activity may help to reduce the likelihood of fluid retention and bloating.
