New guides to practice research and medicines management

A systematic guide to pharmacy practice research projects and a new book on medicines management are now available from the Pharmaceutical Press (the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s publishing arm).

Conducting your pharmacy practice research projectConducting your pharmacy practice research project’ considers the stages of the research process from initial preparation and planning and covers design, sample selection, recruitment of participants, data collection, data processing and analysis and writing up and disseminating the findings.

The book is intended to appeal to both undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy students as well as to practising pharmacists who are new to conducting research projects.

The book has been written by Felicity Smith, professor of pharmacy practice at the School of Pharmacy, University of London, who is a recognised expert in pharmacy practice research and also author of ‘Research methods in pharmacy practice’, published by Pharmaceutical Press in 2002. The 160-page paperback book costs £15.95.

Strategic medicines managementThe second new book, ‘Strategic medicines management’, written by Martin Stephens, is intended to be a practical guide for hospital and primary care pharmacists, focusing on the strategic elements of medicines management.

The book covers all aspects of medicine use, including influencing policies on the purchasing and use of medicines at an organisational level and the prescribing, use and administration of medicines at individual patient level. Chapters describe the concepts of strategic medicines management, review the available evidence and suggest various ways in which the concepts can be applied in practice.

The author is chief pharmacist at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust. He is also author of ‘Hospital pharmacy”, published by Pharmaceutical Press in 2003. The 266-page hardback book costs £34.95.
