Pharmacology

Vitamin D3 in psoriasis

From Miss S. W. Yee, MRPharmS

I read with interest the review article titled “Psoriasis: First-line treatments” (PJ, 21 May, p623). 1a,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 has been found to increase differentiation and reduce proliferation of human keratinocytes, and also cancer cells. These findings have led to its use as treatment for dermatological disorders such as psoriasis and in clinical trials for cancer.

It is more appropriate to say that vitamin D analogues induce or enhance keratinocyte differentiation, rather than inhibit keratinocyte differentiation, as the above article states (p624).
