Glastonbury among first to sell chloramphenicol eye drops

The Arena Pharmacy at Glastonbury Festival was one of the first pharmacies in the UK to sell chloramphenicol eye drops over the counter last week. The Festival and Arena pharmacies on the site took delivery of the product last Thursday and made their first sale on that evening. A total of 30 packs were sold throughout the three-day event.

With about 150,000 revellers, most of whom camp at the site, demand for products to treat conjunctivitis is high. Jim Hutchins, managing pharmacist, Arena Pharmacy, spoke to The Journal during the festival. He said: “Last year we were dispensing [chloramphenicol] right through the festival. Selling it over the counter will take the pressure off the already pushed medical services here.”

There were 50 pharmacists working at the festival this year.
