Winners of ABPI pharmacist awards announced this week

Pharmacists involved in projects including a smoking cessation service and one using PDAs (personal digital assistants) to monitor pharmacists’ interventions were among the winners of the inaugural Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry’s pharmacist awards, it was announced this week.

The awards are given to pharmacists who have developed innovative practices or developed services that ensure patient access to high-quality care or who have improved the quality of prescribing, dispensing or administering medicines. Winners receive sponsored British Pharmaceutical Conference attendance.

Liz Grant, public health pharmacist at Greater Glasgow NHS Board, set up a network of community pharmacies offering nicotine replacement therapy in Greater Glasgow. A discount arranged with Pfizer covers the cost of the fees paid to participating pharmacies. Roger Williams, pharmacy manager of Morriston Hospital’s pharmacy department, Swansea, led a project using a tick-box system on PDAs to monitor pharmacists’ interventions in six pilot sites across Wales.
