New look for British Pharmaceutical Conference dinner in 2005

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has announced a revamp for the British Pharmaceutical Conference dinner in response to feedback from conference participants in 2004.

This year’s dinner, to be held at the Midland Hotel, Manchester, on Monday 26 September, will include an address by a guest speaker and will be followed by dancing to a live band.

For those not attending the dinner, a limited number of tickets will be available for the music and dancing.

The guest speaker will be Richard Smith, former editor of the BMJ, who is now chief executive officer of United Healthcare Europe. (Dr Smith will also give a keynote address earlier in the day on “New models of health care, new opportunities for pharmacists”.)

Following the dinner, the music will be provided by Kissing Fish, who play music in the style of The Commitments (the soul band from the Alan Parker film of the same name, based on the book by Roddy Doyle). The band is led by a pharmacist, Stephen Chapman, who is professor of prescribing studies at Keele University.

The chairman of the Society’s BPC 2005 Conference Committee, Gill Hawksworth, says: “In recent years we have looked to make the dinner less formal to attract greater numbers of people. While the numbers of people have certainly increased, there was a strong feeling at BPC 2004 that the conference dinner needed to be more of a special event. We are hoping that this year’s dinner and dance evening will have something for everyone, making it the perfect place to network and importantly to have fun.”

Tickets for the dinner and dance cost £50 plus VAT. Tickets for the music and dancing only cost £5 plus VAT. The dress code for the evening is smart dress.

BPC 2005 is being held at Manchester International Convention Centre, from Monday September 26 to Wednesday September 28. The conference theme is “A common vision for health: linking science with practice”. Booking information and a summary of the programme appear on pp60–61 (PDF 170K). Bookings can be made through the official conference website, www.bpc2005.org, which also gives the programme in full.
