A preview of the British National Formulary for Children (BNF-C) took place at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, London, last week, in the presence of the Princess Royal.
The BNF-C, jointly published by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, the
British Medical Association, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child
Health and the Neonatal and Paediatric Pharmacists Group, will contain
information and prescribing advice on drugs, both licensed and unlicensed,
commonly used in children as well as guidance on topics such as prescription
writing and reporting adverse drug reactions.
Speaking at the preview, Ian Costello, lead editor of the BNF-C, said
that the new formulary, which builds on ‘Medicines for children’,
will, for the first time, provide health care professionals with all
the information they need to treat children safely from birth up to the
age of 18 years.
He explained that the format of the BNF-C is similar to that of the BNF
so most health care professionals will feel immediately familiar with
it. He added that the formulary would be issued annually but that the
website would be updated frequently, taking into account user research
and feedback by focus groups. The formulary is expected to be launched
in September. |
