Continuing professional development (CPD)

We should have input

From Mr J. D. Barthram, MRPharmS

The profession would benefit greatly if Celia Kellett’s suggestion (PJ, 23 July, p115) was implemented. The “one-size-fits-all” method of continuing professional development needs to be replaced with a more flexible choice of methods. Lack of choice will result in fewer people using the system, resulting in an entirely false, poor reflection of pharmacists’ capabilities, at a time when the new contract is putting us under the spotlight.

Why not use what already works? E-mail, internet, mobile phone internet access, and the national centres for pharmacy postgraduate education are possible methods of CPD recording. Yes, there needs to be an agreed format but since CPD affects every pharmacist then every pharmacist should be given some say in the choice of recording methods.

Julian Barthram
