Gefitinib resistance marker

Researchers have identified a protein — epithelial membrane protein-1 — whose expression in tumour cells correlates with resistance to gefitinib (Iressa). The finding may enable clinicians to identify patients who will not respond to the drug, which is under development for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (published online in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on 8 August).
