Tribute
Wood In a tribute to the late Douglas
George Wood,
JOHN ANSON writes:
Doug Wood qualified from Nottingham University
and undertook
National Service in the Royal Air Force.
After gaining wide experience at several hospitals in the London area
he was appointed chief pharmacist at the West Middlesex Hospital. In
1972 he moved to
Bristol as the first “Noel Hall” area pharmacist and subsequently
the first area pharmaceutical officer for the newly-formed Avon Area Health Authority.
These were times of great change and Doug tackled the many challenges thoughtfully
but with great enthusiasm. The changes included reconfiguration of hospital pharmaceutical
services, establishment of regional specialist units in Bristol, the application
of the Medicines Act to health authority premises, reorganisation of services
to community clinics and dialogue with colleagues in community pharmacy.
Doug was an excellent all-round practical pharmacist with an enviable knowledge
of circulars, reports and other official documents. He was a supporter of, and
held office in, the local branch of the Society. His colleagues were delighted
when he was awarded an MBE in 1984.
Following retirement he undertook locum work in community pharmacy and continued
to pursue his interests of golf and bridge. I will always be grateful for the
wise counsel and kindness extended to me by Doug when I moved to Bristol as a
younger colleague in 1973.
At this time our thoughts are with his wife Jean and the family.
